2004 Surgeon General's Report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis
National Osteoporosis Foundation

The Partnership for Better Bones was established in response to the Michigan Osteoporosis Strategic Plan recommendation to educate the community about osteoporosis prevention and risk reduction.  In 2001, the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI), Michigan Department of Community Health, Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, United Dairy Industry of Michigan and the Michigan Nutrition Network joined together to develop an education program that could be easily implemented across the state.

Better Bones, Brighter Futures was the result of that effort.  Better Bones, Brighter Futures is a 45-minute standardized osteoporosis educational program available in two formats: PowerPoint for large groups and a flip chart version for individual and small groups.

Educators from existing statewide networks of professionals and community educators are trained to implement the program.  Once trained, educators receive program materials and ongoing support for continuing education from program staff located at MPHI.  To date, more than 400 dietitians, nurses, physical therapists, community and health educators have completed the Better Bones educator training, and almost 5,000 people have attended community programs.   For more information or to become an educator please contact Molly Polverento at mpolvere@mphi.org.
